How to find the key and BPM of a song
Drop any song, beat, stem or acapella and the finder listens to it right in your browser. Your file is never uploaded: the analysis runs on your own device, so unreleased music stays private.
How the BPM finder counts the tempo
The finder marks every attack in the audio, from kicks and claps to the first consonant of a sung word, and looks for the spacing that repeats most. It weighs the beat against the bar, so a house track lands on 124 rather than 62. Some grooves can be read two ways: a trap beat at 140 BPM often feels like 70. If your DAW project runs at the other reading, halve or double the number.
How the key finder detects the key
Every note that sounds is folded into one of twelve pitch classes, C to B. The finder corrects for tracks tuned a little sharp or flat, then compares what it heard with major and minor key profiles built from real vocals and mixes.
Relative keys: why A minor and C major both fit
A minor and C major use exactly the same seven notes. A vocal in C major sits on a beat in A minor without any pitch shifting. That is why the vocals the finder suggests come from both keys.
Tips for an accurate result
Use the full song or at least 30 seconds of it. Dry vocals work, but a beat with chords and a bassline gives the clearest answer. For an acapella with long pauses, trim the silence first.

Drop the song into the key and BPM finder above. Within seconds it shows the key and the tempo, worked out right in your browser with nothing uploaded.
How do I find the BPM of a song?
Drop the file above and the finder counts the beat for you and shows the tempo in BPM.
How do I find the key of a song by ear?
Play the song and hum the note it comes to rest on at the end of the chorus: that is usually the root of the key. Find that note on a piano or in your DAW, then play its major and its minor scale along with the song. The one that never clashes is the key.
Is the key and BPM finder free?
Yes. There is no sign up, no limit on files and no watermark. It runs in your browser, which is what lets it stay free.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. The audio is decoded and analysed on your own device. Only the detected key and tempo go into the page address, so the page can show vocals that fit.
Which file types work?
WAV, MP3, AIFF, FLAC, M4A and OGG: anything your browser can play. The first ten minutes of a file are analysed.
Why is the BPM half or double what I expected?
Some grooves can be read two ways: a trap beat at 140 BPM often feels like 70, and drum and bass at 174 like 87. Both readings are correct. If your DAW project runs at the other one, halve or double the number.
Why does it say C major when I expected A minor?
They are relative keys and share the same seven notes, so the notes alone often do not settle it. Where the song comes to rest, on the A or on the C, tells you which one it is. Vocals in either key fit your track.
Can I find the key of an acapella?
Yes. A sung melody carries the key well, especially over 30 seconds or more. Heavily tuned, chopped or spoken vocals are harder, so check those by ear.
